Senior Backend Engineer
About the Role
Acme Robotics is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, build, and maintain the server-side systems that power its robotics platform. This is a full-time, on-site position based in the United States, requiring strong engineering fundamentals and a track record of delivering reliable, scalable backend services. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of software engineering and robotics, contributing directly to products that push the boundaries of autonomous systems.
Responsibilities
- Architect and implement scalable backend services and APIs that support real-time robotics data pipelines and control systems.
- Collaborate with hardware engineers, firmware developers, and product teams to define system interfaces and translate product requirements into technical specifications.
- Own the reliability and performance of core backend infrastructure, including monitoring, alerting, and incident response.
- Design and maintain data storage solutions—relational and time-series databases—optimized for high-frequency sensor and telemetry data.
- Conduct thorough code reviews, set engineering standards, and mentor junior engineers on the backend team.
- Partner with DevOps to drive continuous integration and deployment practices across on-site development and production environments.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional backend engineering experience, with production systems written in Python, Go, or C++.
- Demonstrated experience designing and maintaining RESTful or gRPC APIs at scale.
- Solid understanding of distributed systems concepts, including message queues (RabbitMQ, Kafka, or equivalent) and microservices architecture.
- Proficiency with relational databases (PostgreSQL or MySQL) and familiarity with time-series databases such as InfluxDB or TimescaleDB.
- Experience with containerization and orchestration tools, specifically Docker and Kubernetes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in robotics, autonomous systems, or an adjacent hardware-integrated software domain.
- Familiarity with ROS (Robot Operating System) or real-time data processing frameworks.
- Exposure to cloud infrastructure on AWS, GCP, or Azure, including managed services for IoT or edge computing.
- Experience working in an on-site engineering environment with cross-disciplinary hardware and software teams.
What We Offer
- Competitive compensation, commensurate with experience.
- Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
- 401(k) retirement plan with company contribution.
- Paid time off and observed federal holidays.
- On-site work environment with a collaborative, professionally driven engineering team.
